NCCCO Operator Recertification Program
CCO certification is valid for five years, you may renew as early as four years. Candidates must complete all of their recertification requirements during the 12 months prior to their expiration date. This includes:
- Passing the written Recertification Examinations
- Continuing to meet ASME physical requirements
- Compliance with CCO's Substance Abuse Policy
- Compliance with the Code of Ethics
Candidates, who can document at least 1,000 hours crane-related experience during their period of certification, are not required to take the practical exams to recertify. Crane related experience is defined as, operating, maintenance, inspection or training. Candidates who are required to take the practical exam must do so prior to their certification expires. THERE IS NO GRACE PERIOD. Candidates whose certification has lapsed must take the full written and practical examinations over again in order to be recertified.
The written recertification examination consists of a Core exam in crane operation as well as up to six specialty exams. The Core has 40 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 45 minutes. Each specialty exam consists of 10 multiple choice questions with a time limit of 30 minutes. Four of the questions in each Specialty exam are calculation load chart questions. All candidates are required to take the Core regardless of the specialty(s) in which they wish to be recertified.
Recertification candidates are allowed two attempts to pass the recertification Core or Specialty exams before it expires. Candidates who are unsuccessful after two attempts must take and pass the regular Core and Specialty exams.
Recertification candidates may take their exams up to one year prior to their date of expiration. Regardless of the date of the recertification examination within that one year period, the new five-year certification period beginning from the date of expiration of the candidates initial certification.
Crane Service Industries recommends that candidates attend a refresher class prior to attempting these exams.
